How to prepare for the GRE

This how-to video covers everything you need to know to ace the GRE. Learn how to study, what types of questions to expect and what to do the morning of your exam. Watch this video tutorial and learn how to prepare for the GRE.

Changes in GRE Format by 2011

Changes in GRE Format by 2011

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) , a test taken by 600,000 students across the world each year, will look significantly different in 2011. The Educational Testing Service , which administers the exam, announced its plans to revamp the GRE. on Dec. 4, calling the changes the “largest revisions” in the test’s history.

ETS spokesman Tom Ewing said changes have been a “long time coming.” ETS first announced changes in 2006, but delayed making them until 2007 to add more Internet-based test centers. In 2007, it canceled the planned changes. The new test will include a new grading scale and an increased emphasis on reasoning and critical thinking skills, while focusing less on analogy and vocabulary sections.

Changes to the computer systems the test is administered through will allow students to skip questions and come back later to complete them before finishing the section. Previously, students could not go back to answer questions they skipped. The most significant change, Ewing said, will be in the types of prompts.

“The questions asked will be more focused and require thoughtful responses rather than strictly memorization,” he said. Ewing said exam changes will benefit future test takers.

10 Things to Think About, Before the GRE

10 Things to Think About, Before the GRE

When preparing for a big exam, it’s easy to get tunnel vision. But applying for graduate school isn’t just about one exam. You’ve got an entire application package to prepare. Here are 10 things you may not have thought about yet—but should!

1) Give yourself time. In order to be certain of your commitment to grad school, wait until you’ve finished a number of advanced level classes in your major. Is your interest still high? Have you got the grades to get in?

2) Know what you need. Some graduate programs expect you to be proficient in certain area before starting, even if it was not a requirement of your undergraduate degree. Before committing to a program, be certain you aren’t expected to speak Latin.

3) Diversity is good. While you may love the way Professor Smith lectures, or ace all of Dr. Green’s courses, it’s important not to take too many classes with one teacher. The reasons are two fold; it narrows the perspective you’ll get for that field, and when it comes time to apply, you’ll need 3 different letters of recommendations, sticking to your favorites will leave you short in the long run.

4) Skip generalist classes. Focus on the harder courses, the seminars, classes that require a thesis, or other specially tailored to your major courses. Doing this will set you apart from other undergraduate applicant as a serious candidate and give you an added edge.

5) Consider references early. Who your letters of recommendation come from is almost as important as what they say. Ideal candidates for letters are tenured faculty who have a (positive) national reputation in their field, and know your work in detail. It can also look suspicious if you are missing a letter of recommendation from a recognized faculty member at your school. As soon as you think grad school may be for you, start working on contacts that will be able to provide strong letters of recommendation when the time comes.

6) Be realistic. Graduate school means the next several years of your life will be spent working hard and going into debt. Be aware that a psychology masters means many more hours analyzing quantitative data, the observing how toddlers develop empathy. Prove you’re serious on your application by showing you understand the hard word ahead of you.

7) Give the right writing sample. Select a piece that has a strong topic, shown methodology, makes quality arguments, and is written at a level that demonstrates your readiness for graduate school. And remember to take that suggested length as a very strong suggestion.

8) Focus your personal statement. This is not an autobiography. Your personal statement should describe a project you would like to take on during your masters, and prove that you have the background and intellect to see this project through. Treat you personal statement as an intellectual plan, not a confession of how studying the affect of micro-lending on Burmese widows has change your life.

9) Score at Least 600 on the GRE. Yes, we have to mention this again. Many schools won’t even consider your application if you’ve scored below this line. For the most prestigious programs, that line moves up to 700.

Not so confident in that 600 yet? How about that 700? Get .

After the Exam GRE- Get the Right College

After the Exam - Get the Right College

After giving your GRE (if you're applying for graduate school) or SAT (if applying for an undergrad course) and getting your scores, the next big step is identifying the right college. For domestic as well as international students, the US has been the destination of choice for pursuing their higher education. Now you can easily look up any college in the US thanks to top-colleges.com - a site where you can find the right college/university for you by location (by entering a zip code search), by doing a a program search (e.g. engineering, MBA) or by doing a state search (California, New York etc).

Each school featured on Top-Colleges offers a variety of financial aid programs, accelerated degrees, and flexible scheduling options to suit your needs and lifestyle. You can view dozens of top colleges near you (or near a location of your choice) — with hundreds of degree, diploma and certificate programs.

Get Scholarship Even With Low GRE Score

Get Scholarship Even With Low GRE Score

For GRE score less than 1200, there are very good chances that you will get admission, but admission with Financial aid or scholarship will be little difficult. Keep reading, I will uncover few tips that might just get what you wanted.

If the graduate schools admission committee is pleased with your performance by looking at high GRE score, papers presentation, projects, recommendation letters from high profile professors, they want such students to study in their school and they give admission with some form of Financial aid or Scholarship.

That doesn't mean students with Low GRE are less capable. There are few things that can be done to increase your chances to get college admission with scholarship.

- Ask your professors who recommends you to highlight the achievements from the project work or paper presentation

- Include the copies of your project report along with the graduate schools application packet

- Include copies of all certificates ( Training, computer course, extra-curricular activities)

- Personally contact professors if your research interests are the same as area professors is working on and explain your achievements, chances are you will get admission and and asked to work for him after the class starts. Which is a good sign.

If any of the above doesn't help you to scholarship or some form of Financial aid, don't give up. Get your visa and head to the school where things looks good in terms of funding. Read about short listing from previous posts to understand which universities to select from list of schools you got admission.

Once, you reach university even before the classes start, start looking for college campus part time jobs. If you happen to be in school where there are more International Students, its all about being in right place at right time to get part time job.

Then get an appointment with your professors and start working for him, based on your work, you will be given scholarship or financial aid.

So, even with Low GRE score, by contacting the professors, will double your admission chances

I feel guilty as I write this post, as its been a few months since my last one. Bu then, I also take comfort in the fact that I've made most of the good gre preparation material available for you to download on this blog.

However, I am also slightly annoyed at people, who just visit the site, don't even navigate and straight away post a comment listing their requested material and ask me to email it to them. Dont get me wrong, I get loads of compliments as well from you kind souls, but hey..why do people have to ask me to email them gre books and software for which I have already provided the download link(s) on this site!

You just need to look in the sidebar towards the right. Check out the section titled "popular posts" and the "blog archive" which is more comprehensive. You wont be disappointed, trust me. Even the gre big book is available here (though it does not have the quants section!)

- GRE Maths Skills - a really nice guideline for the GRE Quants section

- GRE Antonyms and Analogies practice - an ebook that compiles the best practice questions on analogies and antonyms.

Wishing all the best for your GRE if you're preparing to give it these days... Get a wonderful gre score and make me proud!

800score.com 5 GRE Verbal Tests - An "800" is the highest possible score on a GRE section. Over the last 8 years, 800score has helped over 100,000 students get their highest possible score...

Quant Software for GRE - Qaunts is an important section of GRE which can trun out to be quite tricky! Brush up your quant skills with the software and questions database in this package.

Kaplan software for GRE - Achieve the scores you need to get into the graduate school of your choice using Kaplan Higher Score GRE software. The Kaplan method has helped millions prepare for the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT exams--tests that can make or break your professional future.

Oh and one important thing. Because there have been problems with previous download links that I have setup (sometimes bandwidth limit gets exceeded...etc etc), I have also included an alternative rapidshare download link for all 3 files above on the main download page itself (which you reach by clicking on the file names mentioned above). So in case you have problems downloading, you can always use the 2nd link!

Your GRE Score,What's a Good GRE Score?Cancelling Your GRE Score

Your GRE Score

Each of the three sections on the GRE is scored separately. You will receive a "scaled score" within a range of 200-800 for the verbal and quantitative sections. You will receive a score on a scale of 0 to 6 for the writing section.
In addition to scaled scores, you'll receive a percentile rank. This calculation places your performance relative to those of a large sample population of other GRE takers. From the percentile rank, graduate schools are able to determine what your scaled scores are worth.

What's a Good GRE Score?

Some schools, like large state universities, have cut-off scores below which they do not consider applicants. Find out what GRE scores impress your target schools. The score you "need" also depends on the area in which you're hoping to study. For example, a 600 Quantitative score might be fine if you're planning to study history. However, it might not be distinctive if your field is engineering.

Cancelling Your GRE Score

At the end of the exam, you will be asked if you want to see and keep your score or not. If "yes," you are given your score and it is entered into your ETS record. If you answer "no," you are not given your score and no score is entered. Requested score reports are sent to schools within 10-15 days after the exam. All non-cancelled GRE testing administrations will be listed (and usable) in your ETS record for 5 years.

GRE Exam

GRE Exam Review

The GRE is the test that’s been taken by millions and millions of college graduates hoping to go on to graduate school over the past several decades. The name stands for Graduate Record Examination, but most people simply call it the GRE for short. The test is given at Thompson Prometric testing centers all over America, and also may be taken at many colleges and universities. As of late 2006, the cost to take the GRE general test is $130. (There are also GRE Subject tests in various subjects, but the information here is about the general GRE exam.) The test is a three-part exam, consisting of a writing part, a quantitative reasoning test, and a verbal reasoning portion. The writing portion is scored from 0 to 6, while the other two parts of the test are each scored on a scale between 200 and 800. The average scores for all people who take the GRE are 470 on the verbal reasoning test, and 570 on the quantitative reasoning test.

The test is taken on a computer, and not with the traditional pencil and paper. It’s also computer adaptive, which means that different people will see different questions, based on their responses to the first few questions, and then subsequent questions. A person who gets questions right will see harder questions, while a person who flunks some questions will get easier ones, in order to determine their level of knowledge. It’s important to focus hard and do well on early questions, as this can lead to a much higher score than answering later questions correctly. And keep in mind that the GRE test is a timed test-on the writing portion, you’ll have 45 minutes to write your first essay analyzing an issue, and 30 minutes to write your second one, in which you analyze an argument. On the quantitative portion of the GRE, you’ll have 45 minutes to answer 28 questions on quantitative comparisons and problem solving. You’ll have 30 minutes to answer 30 questions on the verbal test, which cover language and grammar, reading comprehension, sentence formation, etc. Don’t take the GRE for granted-it’s a difficult and challenging test which can have a huge impact, either positive or negative, on your future goals and career. A good study guide and prep materials are mandatory for any person contemplating taking the GRE in the near future.

Structure of the GRE: Overview

Structure of the GRE Overview :

There are three sections in the Graduate Record Examination: Analytical Writing, Verbal Ability, and Quantitative Ability. On exam day, you will take the Analytical Writing section first. For many students, this is a welcome arrangement, since the Analytical Writing section is the most feared part of the exam.

Analytical Writing section is composed of two essays, one of which takes 45 minutes and one of which takes 30 minutes. First, you will have 45 minutes in which to Present Your Perspective on an Issue. In this essay, you will select a prompt and then assert and defend your opinion on the subject. In order to score well on this exam, you will need to provide good reasoning and examples to support your opinion. Next, you will have 30 minutes in which to Analyze an Argument. In this essay, you will be given a brief written argument, which you will have to critique. In order to compose a successful critique, you will need to identify weak areas of the argument and possible counter-examples that could affect the strength of the argument. After the Analytical Writing section of the exam, you will be given a 10-minute break. After this, there will be the 30-minute Verbal Ability section. The Verbal Ability section is composed of 30 multiple-choice questions of the following types: antonyms, analogies, sentence completions, and reading comprehension questions. After another break, you will be given 45 minutes to complete 28 multiple-choice questions in the Quantitative Ability section. Half of the questions in this section are quantitative comparisons and half are data interpretation and problem-solving questions. In addition, there will be either another Quantitative Ability or another Verbal Ability section. This extra part of the exam will feature some questions that may be used in future versions of the GRE. While your score on this section of the exam will not count towards your final score, it will be impossible for you to distinguish which is the scored section and which is the un-scored section.

U.S Universities and Average GRE Accepting Scores

Information of U.S Graduate Schools and their min or avg scores:-

If you get a high GRE score ….don’t be too euphoric about applying to only top ranked universities (MIT generally doesn’t really bother about your GRE score). I have seen some people who have 1500 GRE score with no I-20 in their hand. Top ranked universities are generally reserved for IIT’s and other highly reputed undergraduate schools in India. They generally prefer PhD admission rather than MS admissions.

Select 6 universities; 2 risk; 2 medium ranged and 2 low profile universities with good funding reputation.
I am here with presenting you some valuable information about US Engineering Schools.I strongly feel that the following information will be immensely helpful for those who are aspiring for MS/PhD programs in reputed US Universities.

GRE Score | How is the GRE scored | How important are my GRE scores | Can I cancel my scores

How is the GRE scored?
Each of the three sections is scored on a scale of 200 to 800. The average scores for the GRE are about 470 for Verbal and 570 for Quantitative.

How important are my GRE scores?

Schools vary tremendously in the weights they place on the different factors in the admission process, so be sure to contact the specific schools to which you are applying in order to determine their unique requirements. Some programs weight GRE scores very heavily, and/or have a minimum score for applicants, while other programs consider GRE scores more of a formality. It is important to note that your GRE scores are a major factor in determining your eligibility for financial aid.

Can I cancel my scores?

Yes. You can cancel your scores immediately after you take the GRE. This is the only time you can cancel your scores. Unfortunately, you must make the decision to cancel at the testing center before you see your scores. In addition, the fact that you cancelled your scores will be noted on your official GRE score report

GRE APPLICATION GUIDE, GRE APPLICATION PROCESS

GRE APPLICATION GUIDE

When applying to a University, you need to include certain items as part of your application package. Each college has its own set of requirements, but the sample list given below should satisfy the needs of most colleges.

1. Bank Draft :

Top 8 GRE Practice Tips

Everyone wants a high GRE score, but only a few manage to do it. The tips listed below should help you score high on the GRE.

1. Begin With a GRE Practice Test

Download the Free GRE Practice test from the ETS site and attempt it. This will help you to get familiar with the GRE & its pattern. You will find out what you're good at, and more importantly, what you're not good at. Which type of questions did you find difficult? Did you miss a lot of GRE analogies but do well on the GRE antonyms? With this information you'll be able to focus your GRE prep on your weaknesses and get a good GRE Score.

. Focus on GRE Practice in Your GRE Study Plan

Based on your strong and weak sections in the GRE, make a study plan and stick to it. Set more time for the areas you are weak at. You can plan to study different sections in different ways so that you find it interesting to prepare for the GRE. For example on one day you can plan to focus on the GRE vocabulary from flash cards and the other day you can focus on the GRE Quantitative section from a book.

3. With More GRE Practice, You’ll Know Question Directions in Advance

Learn & memorize the directions for different sections while preparing for GRE. Once you are familiar with the pattern, you won’t have to spend time on reading directions. You’ll end up saving time on the test day and will get more time to work on solving questions! You can be assured that you will get a better GRE Score, this way.

4. GRE Practice Test Tip: Focus on the First Few Questions

Be relaxed, so that you start slowly and carefully. Due to its computer adaptive nature, the GRE tends to give higher importance to the questions at the beginning of a section. Getting correct questions in the beginning will automatically lead to a higher GRE Score and getting them wrong will lead to a lower GRE Score.

5. Watch the Clock during GRE Practice

If you are running out of time, towards the end of a section, then it’s a good idea to mark answers for pending questions. Don’t forget that missing to answer a question leads to a high penalty – which negatively impacts your GRE Scores.

6. Eliminate Answer Options in GRE Practice

You may come across a tough question in the GRE, where the answer options are too close. If you are short on time, you won’t be able to work out the correct answer. In such cases, an educated guess is the best option. Try eliminating options, using your concepts. This will narrow down your guess to 2 options and sometimes to 1 option. This idea will help you save time and get a higher GRE Score!

7. Take GRE Practice Tests Regularly

The key to improving your GRE Score and problem solving skills is to practice daily. Make sure that you revise all your incorrect answers in the GRE sample test. Eliminating silly mistakes will also lead to a higher GRE Score. Tests will eventually help you build good exam temperament. This will in turn help you get the GRE Score that you want!

8. Do Not Panic When You Get Stuck

If you are stressed, take a second to tell yourself, "I have to give my best shot today without worrying". You must realize that an average GRE Score is not the end of the world. You should also know that very little is known about the score interpretation. In other words, it is likely that a University will select you, depending on other aspects of your academic profile. Perhaps the best GRE Practice tip that you can get, is to stay focussed.
